Investors shifted their attention from Europe to the U.S. on Thursday, pushing stocks slightly higher on good jobs and manufacturing reports. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 45 points, having lost 360 points over the past three days on worries that Europe's latest plan to keep its currency union intact would fail.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 45.33 points, 0.4 percent, to 11,868.81
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.94 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,215.76.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.70 points, less than 0.1 percent, to 2,541.01.
For the week:
The Dow is down 315.45 points, or 2.6 percent.
The S&P is down 39.43, or 3.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 105.84, or 4 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 291.30 points, or 2.5 percent.
The S&P is down 41.88, or 3.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 111.86, or 4.2 percent.
