Many in Delhi remember Sachin's 35th Test century at Delhi's Ferozeshah Kotla in December 2005. They woke up today hoping for the same magic. Sachin Tendulkar was batting in Kotla on 33 and India was headed for a win.
Hours later, there were big smiles for the first India win in seven Tests, which included the brutal washout tour of England. But the way to the smiles was not without heartbreak. For Sachin stumbled at 76, 24 runs short of what everyone hoped would be his grand ton - the 100th 100 in international cricket.
Sachin was timing the ball well on a Kotla pitch that was looking increasingly better with him at the crease. He trusted the bounce, once too often perhaps, as a half-tracker from Devendra Bishoo failed to rise. Sachin was out leg before.
After the build-up and the stroke-play, the dismissal was an anticlimax. A stoic Sachin walked back, head upright, bat held in usual style. The crowds, sad as they were, cheered him hugely right into the stands. ?
This was Sachin Tendulkar's 182nd Test match - one in which he crossed some other milestones. When he scored his 28th run in the second innings with a single, ironically off Devendra Bishoo, who would come back to deny him the bigger record, Sachin yesterday becoming the first batsman ever to make 15,000 runs in Test cricket. But then, he was the first at 14,000 and at 13,000 too. The man who is second to him, Rahul Dravid, is at 12,860.
Today, Sachin Tendulkar also overtook Rahul Dravid as the leading run-getter in chases as he set up India's five-wicket win along with VVS Laxman.
