How Is Creating Good Copies Important For Your Firm?

For the growth and increased sales of any business, effective copywriting is important. Copywriting is not just a group of words or some attractive design, but it is the art of making use of suitable words and designs to attract the crowd to make them purchase a product or make use of a service. Effective copywriting is an effective tool to differentiate your product from that of others in the market.

?

There are a lot of differences in copy writing and writing articles. In an article you provide a lot of information where as in copywriting it's just a question, statement, sentence or a phrase which must catch the attention. Let's look at some of the easy methods to develop copies for your product.

?

Project Your Strength.

?

When you write copies, it is essential to understand the strong points of your product or service. Understanding your product and its effect on consumers will help you create effective copies by projecting the positive factors.

?

Know Your Competitor.

?

Before venturing into copywriting, conduct a thorough market research on the category of product you are creating the copy for. Research is essential if you wish to know your competitors and current trends in market. It will also help you compare your position with respect to competitors and see how you can make a difference to your position. Make a list of all the shortcomings in their product and see if you can project your positives against it. While advertising your product against theirs, be reasonable and ready to face any question they throw at you.

?

Do You Know Your Target Audience?.

?

At last, you should be able to convince your audience for purchasing your product. It is very important to understand who your consumers are. Decide on their demographics and income. You can do a survey or a study on their purchasing habits and needs. It is essential for your company as you would not wish to risk your investments.

?

Will it Make My Life Easier?.

?

When a customer gets a positive solution to this question, by watching your ad, then you have hit the mark. Through your ads, your customers must feel their life will become simpler and happier once they buy your product. Your copy should clearly communicate any offers and information on the product. Focus on 'YOU'.

?

It is good to address your consumers while creating copies. Do not write 'we', instead always employ 'you', so that it becomes a direct interaction and proves to be more effective than using 'we'.

?

End with a Persuasion.

?

One thing you should make sure is that your copies must not be stuffed with information which can make it uninteresting. End your copies with a call for action so that your customers are compelled to know your product more.

(AP) ? WikiLeaks said Monday it was publishing a massive trove of leaked emails from the geopolitical analysis firm Stratfor, shedding light on the inner workings of the Texas-based think tank that bills itself as a leading provider of global intelligence to a range of clients.

The online anti-secrecy group said it had more than 5 million Stratfor emails and it was putting them out in collaboration with two dozen international media organizations.

The small selection so-far published to WikiLeaks' website gave a rare look at the daily routine at a private intel firm: One described a $6,000-a-month payment made to a Middle Eastern source, another carried bits of gossip dropped by a retired spook, and many were filled with off-color office banter.

An initial examination of the emails carried out by The Associated Press turned up a mix of the innocuous and embarrassing, but WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange promised more explosive material in the coming weeks.

"What we have discovered is a company that is a private intelligence Enron," Assange told London's Frontline Club, referring to the Texas energy giant whose spectacular bankruptcy turned it into a byword for corporate malfeasance.

Assange accused Stratfor of funneling money to informants through offshore tax havens, monitoring activist groups on behalf of major multinationals, and making investments based on its secret intelligence.

"Stratfor is simply out of control," he said.

Stratfor pushed back against the suggestion that there was anything improper in the way it dealt with its contacts.

"Stratfor has worked to build good sources in many countries around the world, as any publisher of global geopolitical analysis would do," the company said in a statement. "We have done so in a straightforward manner and we are committed to meeting the highest standards of professional conduct."

The Stratfor statement suggested the company wouldn't be commenting in any further detail on Assange's allegations.

"Having had our property stolen, we will not be victimized twice by submitting to questioning about them," the statement said.

How WikiLeaks got the company's emails remains unclear ? Assange refused to answer questions about the matter Monday ? but Stratfor said the messages appeared to be the same ones stolen by hackers over the Christmas holidays. The breach, claimed by the Internet activist group Anonymous, ravaged the company's servers and led to the disclosure of thousands of credit card numbers, among other information.

Several media groups, including Rolling Stone magazine and Germany's NDR broadcaster, say they have been offered advance access to the emails and that they will publish stories based on the documents if appropriate.

One journalist involved in the deal said that the documents were made available by WikiLeaks within the past month.

"They haven't told us anything about how they obtained them," the journalist said, speaking anonymously to discuss sourcing issues.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor is a subscription-based publisher providing political, economic and military analysis to help customers reduce risk. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos.

The emails thus far posted to the Web are generally mundane ? dealing with training, staffing, budgets and administration. Others carry boasts about the company's reach. In one, Stratfor Vice President of Intelligence Fred Burton brags about his "trusted former CIA cronies." In another, he promises to "see what I can uncover" about a classified FBI investigation.

Messages left for Burton weren't immediately returned. Stratfor has speculated that some of the leaked emails may have been altered or forged, although the firm did not provide any evidence of tampering.

The hackers involved took to Twitter to reject the suggestion as "pathetic."

One Stratfor email warned about letting people know too much about how the company operated.

"I think showing too much of our inner workings devalues our Mystique," the email said. "People don't know how we collect our intelligence and that's one of the cool, mysterious things about STRATFOR."

2012 Oscars: Best And Worst Speeches

Meryl Streep and Jean Dujardin won us over, while Bret McKenzie made a critical omission during his acceptance.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Meryl Streep wins at the 84th annual Academy Awards
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

One of the most essential parts of any Oscar night is the speeches. If you win, your job is only halfway done. Now you have to get up onstage in front of a billion people and practice your public speaking.

Some are heartfelt, some are funny, and some will go down in history — for better or worse. With so much of the ceremony dedicated to acceptance speeches, it's important to look back and decide who owned the night and who fell on their face.

Here are our best and worst speeches of the 2012 Academy Awards:

Best
Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress
For as predictable as Spencer's win for Best Supporting Actress was, her speech ended the long road to Oscar night in style. She went with the time-tested acceptance-speech traditions of emotion and honesty. Plus, she thanked the state of Alabama, the only state to get a shout-out during the night.

Meryl Streep for Best Actress
It came as a big surprise, and no one knew that better than Streep. Her "whatever" attitude almost had us forget the upset win over Viola Davis. It may not have been the most just outcome, but at the very least we got a funny speech instead.

Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor
As the oldest person to ever win an acting Oscar, Plummer outdid most everyone younger than him and delivered one of the most memorable speeches of the night. It was class all the way for Plummer, who sincerely thanked his wife, daughter and co-star Ewan McGregor. He joked that, in his mother's womb, "I was already rehearsing my Academy acceptance speech, but it was so long ago, mercifully for you, I've forgotten it."

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for Best Adapted Screenplay
You have to admit that Angelina Jolie was standing a little oddly, with her right leg out of the high slit in her dress, as she read the names of the nominees. Jim Rash, known for his role on "Community," also took note and mimicked the strange posture after he won the award for his work on the "Descendants" screenplay.

Jean Dujardin for Best Actor
A good way to score points as a Frenchman winning an Academy Award in America is to open your speech with, "I love your country!" Dujardin read the rest of his speech to help with his English, but it was the outburst in French at the end of his acceptance that really won us over.

Worst
Bret McKenzie for Best Song
Listen, Bret. We love you, and we're so happy you won. But there would be no Muppets movie without Jason Segel. He may not have written any of the songs, but he co-wrote the film, put his name on the line and sang "Man or Muppet," the winning song. At the very least, you should have given the man a simple "thanks."

Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall for Best Editing
It's understandable that you were caught off guard — "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" didn't get a whole lot of nominations — but you need to be a little more prepared than you were. You're still expected to give a speech. You won just a year ago, so you have enough experience with this kind of thing.

Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland for Best Makeup
It's OK if you write your speech down before you head onto the stage to accept your award. It's even OK if you read your speech directly from the cards you wrote them on. But please make sure that the speech is a good one if you're going to do so.

Mount Diablo Unified Community Advisory Committee on Special ...

When the moving truck finally arrived, David Cicarelli popped out of his parent's house with a 10-pack of juice boxes, excited that his long wait was over at last.

The movers were behind schedule, but the real delay to leave a Lincolnshire facility began years ago for Cicarelli, 38, who has developmental disabilities and had long been denied his request to live closer to his family in a community-based group home.

On Thursday, though, Cicarelli prepared to end his temporary stay at his parents' home and spend his first night at his new home in Wheeling ? the result of a federal lawsuit settled with a landmark consent decree in June. Cicarelli was one of five plaintiffs in the civil rights case, filed against the state of Illinois in 2005 in an effort to bring the state into compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

'Clinton' comes to TV in time for Presidents' Day

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Here's our look at the week ahead in entertainment.

TV
President Bill Clinton's name will forever be tied to that of Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose affair with the married president captured headlines worldwide in 1995 and 1996. But not all of the four hours of "Clinton"coming up on PBS's "American Experience" focus on the scandal. Clinton's turbulent Arkansas childhood, his troubled marriage to now Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the many complexities of his presidency are all covered. (Feb. 19 and 20, 9 p.m., PBS.)

Hollywood's biggest night comes to TV on Feb. 26 as the Academy Awards sweep on to your screen. Billy Crystal is hosting, though the comic was second choice -- comedian Eddie Murphy stepped down after his friend, Brett Ratner, who was producing the show, resigned after?using a gay slur. If you're running an office pool, you'd do well to put money on "The Artist," "Hugo, and "The Descendants," all of which are expected to have a golden night. (Feb. 26, 7 p.m., ABC.)

Movies
The Navy SEALs have perhaps never been more in the spotlight, thanks to the killing of Osama bin Laden and the recent rescue of two people held hostage by Somali pirates. The SEALs are the topic of "Act of Valor,"a new movie which mixes actors and actual SEALs, and shows the group fighting terrorists and rescuing a kidnapped CIA officer. (Opens Feb. 24.)

DVD
Antonio Banderas gives a Latin lover-twist to the fairy-tale cat "Puss in Boots." The furry feline once played second fiddle to green ogre Shrek, but now he has his own movie. Puss re-teams with childhood pal Humpty Dumpty and falls for pretty Kitty Soft Paws as they pursue the magical beans and golden eggs of fairy-tale legend. (On DVD Feb. 24.)

There's no need to fear! "Underdog" is here! The classic cartoon featuring the superhero dog and heroine Sweet Polly Purebred is now out on DVD in a nine-disc DVD set. It's the first time all three seasons of the cult favorite are together in a box set. (On DVD Feb. 21.)?

YouTube enlists big-name help to redefine channels

YouTube is enlisting Hollywood's help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes.

The online video giant is aiming to create 25 hours of programming per day with the help of some of the top names in traditional TV. The Google-owned site is spreading its wealth among producers, directors, and other filmmakers, using a $100 million pot of seed money it committed last fall. The fund represents YouTube's largest spending on original content so far.

YouTube believes it is laying groundwork for the future. While the number of traditional TV watchers has leveled off in recent years, more and more people are watching video on mobile phones, tablets and computers, especially the 18- to 34-year-old age demographic that advertisers covert.

The idea is to create 96 additional YouTube channels, which are essentially artists' home pages, where viewers can see existing video clips and click "subscribe" to be notified when new content goes up.

Well-funded videos by a select roster of stars are likely to be more watchable than the average YouTube fare of cute cats and webcam monologues. YouTube is betting that a solid stream of good content will attract more revenue from advertisers, bring viewers back frequently and bolster its parent company's fledgling Web-connected-TV platform, Google TV.

The cash has enticed some of TV's biggest stars, including "Fast Five" director Justin Lin, who directs episodes of "Community," "CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker and Nancy Tellem, the former president of CBS entertainment.

Zuiker is teaming up on a horror series for YouTube after observing his own family's behavior. His three pre-teen sons spend more time on phones, iPads and computers than watching TV these days.

"We want to jointly take the risk with YouTube and roll the dice on the future," Zuiker says. "The old regime is going to falter because everybody thinks the TV is the only device that really counts, and that's just not the case."

For producers, it's a chance to create shows that are completely free of meddling from major studios. They can also stay relevant with a younger crowd whose viewing is moving increasingly online.

Several new channels such as the extreme sports-focused Network A and Spanish-language Tutele have launched already. YouTube hopes to have them all up and running by this summer.

"This was really about galvanizing the ecosystem at large," says Alex Carloss, global head of original programming for YouTube. "We see the portfolio (of funded channels) really representing the best of TV meeting the best of the Web."

YouTube isn't the only Web video service that has started to pay for original content. Netflix recently launched the original series "Lilyhammer," while Hulu premiered "Battleground." But YouTube videos tend to be under 10 minutes, instead of fitting into traditional half-hour or hour-long TV slots. And aside from a few guidelines, ultimate control is given over to the artist, including what is uploaded and when new episodes appear.

YouTubers also get away with far edgier stuff than the middle finger that rapper M.I.A. flashed during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Although YouTube's entire investment is less than half of what some studios spend on one blockbuster movie, about a third of the new channels were awarded to scrappy YouTube veterans who already know how to make it big online while keeping production costs low.

YouTube expects to recoup what it spends on the grants by sharing ad revenue the new videos generate.

At Maker Studios, which received money for three new channels, the funds have turbo-charged an already teeming operation that has about 160 full-time staff spread across several buildings crammed with props and computers in west Los Angeles.

On a recent visit, two scenes were being shot in an alley. One was for a parody of a Christmas movie trailer. The other was for a new series about a crime-fighting van called "Si, Es I, Pepe."

Maker cranks out about 300 YouTube videos each month at a bare-bones cost of about $1,000 each.

The studio's videos generate a whopping 500 million views each month, thanks largely to established hits that include Ray William Johnson's roundup of crazy videos and such viral giants as "Epic Rap Battles of History."

Advertisers pay up to $10 per thousand views for video ads that precede the featured content, according to TubeMogul, a major buyer of YouTube ads for the nation's biggest advertisers including Proctor & Gamble Co. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Established YouTube partners share roughly half of their revenue with the site. So if Maker videos generate $1 or $2 in ad revenue per thousand views, it would just be scraping by.

Maker co-founder Danny Zappin, who quit film school to buy a high-end camera to start a career on YouTube, says it's a "tricky balance" to keep the studio's share of ad revenue higher than the cost of video-making. The undisclosed amount it got from YouTube, on top of the $1.5 million venture capital it received about a year ago, lets Maker put up more videos without waiting for the views and cash to roll in.

"It gives us resources and runway that we wouldn't otherwise have," Zappin said.

For other less-established players in online video, the money has given them an added reason to get involved.

Former CBS executive Tellem teamed up with TV entrepreneur Brian Bedol to create Bedrocket Media Ventures, an upstart production company behind several new YouTube channels, including Network A. The funding "allowed us, or caused us, to focus on YouTube ahead of other platforms," Bedol says.

Analysts believe YouTube has made a wise investment at a time ad rates for online video are rising.

YouTube can be successful with just a few big hits ? think of Rebecca Black's "Friday" ? even if thousands of videos fall flat. It's similar to the hit-or-miss approach to traditional TV and movies.

"The investor community does not look at this as money wasted," Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter says.

Since promising to share ad revenue with its most popular uploaders in 2007, YouTube has invested in original content mainly by paying for equipment and training new artists, but it was never as big as this.

Backing up its new strategy, YouTube also revamped its homepage to prioritize channels and recommendations above just the most-viewed videos. The revamp allows advertisers to target popular channels or categories of content more easily.

YouTube's funding plan takes a page from Apple's playbook. When the iPhone maker launched its App Store in 2008, a $100 million seed fund created by Silicon Valley investor John Doerr spawned hundreds of thousands of new apps.

"Our developers are not software engineers," YouTube's vice president of global content partnerships, Robert Kyncl, told a convention in January. "Our developers are Hollywood stars, are online stars, are regular folks like you and I."

If nothing else, the injection of funds will spawn content never before been seen on any screen, large or small.

"Fast Five" director Lin, who is teaming up with YouTube stars Ryan Higa and Kevin "KevJumba" Wu on the "YOMYOMF" channel, said his focus is not to try to find audiences with stereotypical Asian-American content. Rather, the idea is to give a platform to people who have unique voices but haven't been heard yet.

He says Higa and Wu didn't follow any set rules when they jumped to popularity with a mix of oddball humor, brutal honesty and rap.

"They just did what they loved, and people came," Lin said. "If we're going to fail, I would rather go out with that philosophy."

Stars, family, fans to mourn Whitney Houston

Mel Evans / AP

Candles burn at a memorial to Whitney Houston outside New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J., early Saturday.

By msnbc.com news services

Update, 10:05 a.m. ET: Hearse carrying Whitney Houston's casket has arrived at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, a church where Houston sung as a child. Watch live video from the New Hope Baptist Church here.

Update, 9:45 a.m. ET: Whitney Houston's casket has departed Whigham Funeral Home in a gold hearse, escorted by a police motorcade, NBC News reports.

Soul, gospel and pop music greats from the past and present are set to mourn Whitney Houston Saturday, a week after the sudden death of the singer whose spectacular voice and best-selling albums made her one of biggest pop stars of her era.

Houston, who died in a Beverly Hills hotel room last week, recorded stirring love songs and vibrant, dance tunes during a 30-year career that peaked with her 1992 signature hit "I Will Always Love You."

She was due to be honored by family and friends at a funeral service in her native Newark, New Jersey. While the world knew her as one of the greatest artists of her generation, to her family and friends, she was just "Nippy."

A nickname given to Houston when she was a child, it stuck with her through adulthood and, later, would become the name of one of her companies.

In this TODAY exclusive, singer Aretha Franklin talks with TODAY's Al Roker about her reaction to the death of Whitney Houston, her close friend.

There was a heavy police presence outside the invitation-only funeral on Saturday and streets were cordoned off.

Houston's body was expected to leave a nearby funeral home under tight security en route to the church. Fans have been urged to stay home and watch the funeral on the Internet or television.

Keys, Wonder, Franklin, Warwick
The funeral is for invited guests only. Houston is scheduled to be buried next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.

Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Houston's cousin Dionne Warwick will sing and speak at the New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston sang as a child in the choir with her mother, Cissy Houston, who was a backup singer for Franklin.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks with MSNBC contributor Toure and Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson about pop singer Whitney Houston's Saturday invitation-only funeral service in Newark, New Jersey.

Hollywood stars Kevin Costner and Tyler Perry and Houston's mentor, record producer Clive Davis, were also scheduled to speak. Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, Beyonce and Bill Cosby were expected to attend the service.

Houston's family decided against a public memorial, but fans were expected to crowd the streets around the church and nearby cemetery where she is due to be buried.

Many have left flowers, cards and balloons dedicated to the singer who became a global star with her 1985 debut album that included the hits "Saving All My Love For You," "How Will I Know" and "Greatest Love Of All."

Houston was among the greatest singers of the 1980s and 1990s, but her personal life and marriage to singer Bobby Brown was tumultuous. She admitted to heavy use of cocaine, marijuana, alcohol and prescription pills.

Inside Houston's last recording session

Her death at age 48 shocked her family, fans and the music industry. Houston was found underwater in a hotel bathtub on the eve of the music industry's Grammy Awards. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Houston grew up surrounded by gospel and soul music legends like Franklin and Warwick. She later forged new territory for a black, female artist who brought R&B and gospel touches into pop music's mainstream.

After her debut, her popularity grew exponentially with her second album, "Whitney" (1987), with all four singles -- "Didn't We Almost Have It All", "So Emotional", "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" -- hitting No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Coping with fame
Her music videos featuring her 1980s style and innocent, fun-loving image made her wildly popular around the world. In the 1992 movie "The Bodyguard," co-starring Costner, Houston played a character not far removed from her real self: an international singing sensation coping with fame.

She made other films including "The Preacher's Wife," but the 15-year period when she was married to singer Brown coincided with a decline in the quality and frequency of her albums. The couple, who have an 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, divorced in 2007.

Houston's powerful voice suffered in recent years. On her last world tour in 2010, she struggled to hit high notes.

She spoke publicly about her struggles with addiction.

In a 2002 interview, TV journalist Diane Sawyer asked Houston what was the "biggest devil" among her failings. Houston answered: "Nobody makes me do anything I don't want to do. So the bigger devil is me, I am either my best friend or my worst enemy."

Clients Are Starting to See Outsourcing's Yoga Benefit

Flexible_yogaSaving money continues to be the top reason many businesses outsource IT services and business processes. It might not be the smartest reason ? in fact, if that's the sole motivator for a Nearshore project, it could mean nothing but trouble ahead ? but it still pops up at the top of many executive surveys.

But there's another benefit that more decision-makers are now citing more frequently: Flexibility. Yes, just like practitioners of yoga, they see value in being more bendy.

Nearly 70% of the executives questioned for the 2011 Corporate Client Survey said moving work offshore allows them to be more flexible and better poised to adapt to business conditions.

The survey is conducted by the Center for International Business Education (CIBER) and the International Offshoring Research Network Project at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.

According to Arie Lewin, CIBER director and international business professor at Fuqua, "For companies that are engaged in offshoring, we've seen a significant jump in the number of respondents who say offshoring activities have led to improved organizational flexibility, from 48 percent in 2009 to 66 percent in 2011."

"As U.S. firms increase the scale and scope of their global sourcing, they are laying the foundation for achieving far-reaching organizational flexibility," Lewin says in a press statement. "They say that with these capabilities, they can redesign processes, enhance efficiencies, improve service quality and enable more effective access to new markets and promoting innovation."

Lewin also says "cost savings are no longer the primary driver" of sourcing strategies.

An earlier survey by Capgemini found similar results, where 60% of executives said outsourcing can make a business more agile. This is not really surprising. What is surprising is that in the Fuqua survey of just two years earlier, only 48% said offshoring had increased their company's flexibility.

You might wonder what was going on with the outsourcing relationships of those clients who did not feel more flexible. Did they manage them poorly? Did the provider cause so many problems that the client spent too much time fighting fires? Either of those is possible. There's no lack of experts who say offshoring can backfire and result in less flexibility to respond to market changes. But I want to talk to some of these clients who've said operations were stiffened rather than made more nimble by outsourcing and find out why they feel that way.

Did the company outsource work only to enhance the bottom line and in the process cut the innovative talent needed at home to respond to business conditions? Did management not even think about flexibility when defining its reasons for outsourcing? Is the company run by a bunch of inflexible penny-pinching bureaucrats? More on all this after further investigation.

One other result from the Corporate Client Survey that's important to highlight: US businesses are still preferring to keep their sourcing relationships at a distance. Says Duke's summary of the survey: "Latin America is emerging as a favored global sourcing site, but U.S. companies have yet to find operational or financial advantages in moving well-established and high-performing far-shore operations to near-shore locations."

That "have yet to find" part is also something that deserves further investigation.

High-level drug meeting focuses on Afghanistan (AP)

VIENNA ? U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke Thursday of a losing battle against the fight to eradicate drugs in Afghanistan, noting that opium production there has grown by 61 percent in the past year and warning that "time is not on our side."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also urged the Afghan government to do more to combat drug trade and smuggling, declaring it is up to the government and international troops based in the country "to destroy the opium fields and the laboratories where heroin is produced."

Afghanistan's minister for counter-narcotics, however, suggested that drugs can only be eradicated if security in his country is improved.

The three are among senior officials from more than 50 countries attending a conference dedicated to work on ways to reduce the production and flow of drugs from Afghanistan, and Ban, in an opening statement to the meeting, warned that the problem extends beyond those who abuse drugs and is threatening Afghanistan itself.

"Drug trafficking and transnational organized crime undermine the health of fragile states, (and) weaken the rule of law," he told delegates. "Above all, the Afghan government must prioritize the issue of narcotics."

Lavrov, speaking ahead of the meeting, also urged "the Afghanistan leaders to commit to this ... to destroy the opium fields and the laboratories where the heroin is produced."

Named for the agreement that created it nine years ago, the Paris Pact meeting is meant to review steps taken to reduce production and trafficking of opiates from Afghanistan. It will look at ways to block financial flows from the illicit drug trade, choke the flow of chemicals used to make heroin and strengthen local initiatives to help combat drug abuse by Afghans.

But the meeting has no enforcing powers, and international attempts to reduce the Afghan drug problem have had little success.

A January report by the U.N. Office of Drugs and Crime said revenue from opium production in Afghanistan soared by 133 percent last year to about $1.4 billion, or about one-tenth of the country's GDP, after the crop recovered from a 2010 blight and returned to previous levels.

A copy of the Vienna meeting's final declaration obtained in advance by The Associated Press reflects realities, saying that Afghanistan's drug problem "continues to be a serious concern."

"Illicit traffic in opiates, including heroin, is a growing problem," says the document, adding that revenues it generates fuel "corruption, organized crime and in some cases ... terrorist activities and insurgency."

Ban, in his opening comments, cited a 2011 U.N. survey, saying that poppy cultivation has increased by 7 percent and opium production by 61 percent in the past year.

"Export earnings from Afghan opiates may be worth as much as $2.4 billion" annually, he said. "We cannot expect stability when 15 percent of Afghanistan's Gross Domestic Product comes from the drug trade."

Zarar Ahmad Muqbel Osmani, the Afghan minister, said his country understands international concerns but noted that "95 percent of poppy cultivation takes place in nine insecure provinces." He urged the international community to work hard in interdicting the components needed to turn opium into heroin that enter Afghanistan from neighboring countries."

While the meeting formally focuses on drugs, some of the powerful foreign ministers attending have already announced that they will use the conference to discuss Syria on the sidelines.

Lavrov told reporters Wednesday that he will meet with French counterpart Alain Juppe to be briefed on a French plan to set up humanitarian corridors in Syria that are free of violence. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is also attending the conference, along with government ministers from Iran and Afghanistan.

The United States will be represented by Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns.
