Trapped By The Web ? But For How Long? Take the Kelberman Challenge
You sit down, turn on the computer, up comes an image, could be anything, a cloud, a koala bear, a video. On the right side of the screen there are more images like it, or almost like it, so you click on one of those, just because ... because what? Because it's there? Because it's waiting? Because, for no conceivable reason, you suddenly have a yearning for balloon pictures? You don't plan this, you have no plan, but you keep going, gently pulled by the lure of "next."
After a cloud of blue balloons comes another, this time they're red, then yellow and blue, then many colors, then there are more, and more ... balloons follow balloons. ... You keep clicking, pulled by some invisible lure. A mathematical spider built of ones and zeros hiding in some server in some empty room somewhere ? you will never know where ? has grabbed on to your brain and is tugging you from cloud to cloud, from clouds to storms, from storms to lightning videos, from lightning videos to lights, from lights to ... whatever. ... You tell yourself, "Just one more, one or two more, then I'll stop." But you don't stop.
They call this "surfing," but you're not surfing ? you're not free. You keep clicking, knowing that you shouldn't, knowing that you don't want to ... but you DO want to.
Get Me Out Of Here!
You know this feeling, right? Everybody's been trapped by the Web. But for those of you who like to test themselves, who want know their own strength, I've got a proposition for you.
Remember in The Odyssey, how Odysseus had to tie himself to the mast of his ship to keep from throwing himself at the Sirens, whose hauntingly beautiful songs wooed sailors to their deaths? Remember them? I've just discovered their Web equivalent.
It's a subtly addictive, psychologically sophisticated art project, created by Dina Kelberman, who must have studied at the Lay's Potato Chip School of Addiction. (They had an ad that dared: "Betcha can't eat just one!") She has pulled images from the Web and arranged them into a sensuously sly series of related sequences that move, in baby steps, just like your mind does, from one pattern to another.
Stay, Stay, Stay, Stay ...
Once you start looking at Dina's pictures, I warn you: It's very, very hard to stop. The first ones, trucks kicking up dust, then planes trailing colored clouds, aren't that grabby, but when you let yourself relax, go slack-jawed and keep clicking, after a minute or two ? for me it happened around the variously colored wrestling mats ? you find the patterns start pulling at your brain, and you fall into a pleasant, webbyish stupor, clicking, clicking, clicking ...
Double warning: It doesn't end. Well, there is an end, but there are hundreds, maybe a thousand images here. So you are not likely to exhaust the supply.
Third warning: She builds her themes slowly. For example, you'll see a balloon, then a bunch of balloons, then a sea of balloons, then all blue balloons, then all blue with a few yellow balloons, then more yellows, then all yellows, then fewer balloons. ... She moves in small, seductive, surprising little steps so your mind stays hungry; expectations stay heightened. She's good. The question is, are you better? Can you walk away? I watched for about four minutes (an eon!) before I got mad-at-myself-enough to leave.
How long will she keep you?
Don't even think about going to the end. You have better things to do. Seriously.

Poll Results: How Many Xbox 360 Consoles Have Died on You ...
Last week we asked you how many Xbox 360 consoles have died on you? for our poll question. A lot of you were interested in weighing in on this topic, making it the most voted on poll to-date with 945 votes (thanks to everyone that voted). While 28 percent (262 votes) of the votes went to "I have never owned an Xbox 360," it was a tie between "never" (226 votes) and "only one" (228 votes). Both clocked in at 24 percent. Approximately 14 percent (132 votes) said that they had at least two systems die, five percent (43 votes) said that three Xbox 360's gave up the ghost on them, and six percent (54 votes) said they had four or more systems die on them.
Doing a little math based on these figures, voters had a total of 837 Xbox 360's die on them:
228 (from poll answer #2)
264 (from #3)
129 (from #4)
216 (from #5)
Again, thanks to everyone who participated in last week's poll. We're sorry that Microsoft doesn't make a better console...

Ware broke his leg in the first half of Sunday's Midwest Regional final when he landed awkwardly after trying to contest a 3-point shot, breaking his leg in two places. He was taken off the court on a stretcher as his stunned teammates openly wept. His teammates went on to defeat Duke 85-63 to reach their second straight Final Four. Louisville's Kevin Ware has taken what he said would be the hardest step in his recovery ? the first one.
The sophomore guard was back on the Cardinals' campus Tuesday afternoon after he had been released from an Indianapolis hospital, two days after millions watched him break his right leg on a horrifying play trying to block a shot.
"I couldn't be anymore happier to see my brothers man. Unexplainable!!" Ware tweeted after returning to the Cardinals' practice facility, entering through a back door.
He had said on Facebook that "the first step is always the hardest one to take"
Ware had been at Methodist Hospital since sustaining the horrific injury Sunday during in the first half of Louisville's 85-63 win over Duke in the Midwest Regional. He underwent surgery to repair compound fractures of the tibia in the leg and is expected to be out a year.
The next step for Ware may be a trip to Atlanta for the Final Four.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino has said he would like Ware to travel with the team to the national semifinals. Athletic department spokesman Kenny Klein said Tuesday that doctor's wouldn't likely sign off on Ware traveling until Wednesday.
Ware broke his leg after going up to block a shot and landing awkwardly. The injury devastated Pitino and Ware's Louisville teammates, many of whom were seen crying after seeing the severity of the break.
With encouraging words from Ware, who told the team, "just go win the game," the top-seeded Cardinals regrouped to win and earn their second consecutive Final Four berth.
Pitino and his son, Richard, spent Monday at the hospital with Ware, who was pictured holding the championship trophy in his bed. Ware later posted a comment on Facebook saying, "the first step is always the hardest one to take" along with a photo of him on crutches.
On Monday, university President James Ramsey described the injury as "heartbreaking" and said Ware will get the best medical care and rehabilitation the university can offer.
Social media has exploded with discussion of Ware's injury, resulting in words of support from around the country. Former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann, who also suffered a horrific leg injury on Monday Night Football in 1985 that ended his career, and Miami Heat stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were among those tweeting encouraging words.
On campus, a makeshift tribute was taped to a window in the Student Activities Center, and students filed by and lined up one by one to sign the 3-by-5 foot poster that said, 'We Stand Behind You, Kevin! Get Well (hash)5!
Ware appreciated the support and said it boosted his mood. In an interview with the Louisville Courier-Journal, he said, "It really brought my spirits up. ... And it's kind of hard to keep your spirits up in a situation like this."
Ware also told the Courier-Journal that he remembered teammate Luke Hancock comforting him, and being surrounded by other Cardinals immediately after he suffered the injury. During that time Ware said he went into "Kevin mode," telling his team to win the game.
"When they took me off the court," Ware told the paper, "I heard so many cheers, and I'm like 'When I'm out of surgery, there's gonna be some good news.' "
Ware's recollection was not as clear when he woke on Monday morning full of medication, though he said his memory returned upon seeing the championship trophy in his hospital room.

Learn How Commercial Real Estate Can Make Money For You ...
TIP! When choosing a broker, investigate their years of actual commercial market experience. Make sure they are specializing in the desired area that you?re selling or buying in.
There are many reasons why you should consider investing in commercial real estate. Make sure, however, that your decision is based on sound reasoning and a solid understanding of the market. Your level of expertise will have a direct effect on the amount of money you?re able to get as a return on your commercial real estate investment. The tips detailed below can help you gain new knowledge, or add to your existing knowledge about investing in commercial real estate.
TIP! Be mindful that rent considerations, and future intentions, are key to ensuring a good path for your investment when preparing a new lease agreement. Know how to plan for the rent you wish to charge before talking to a prospective tenant.
One of the key things to consider when working with commercial loans instead of those from the residential market is that you should expect to pay a higher percentage of money down on the property. Looking for good lenders and great investments through the resources you can utilize will help you qualify for the loans you seek.
TIP! If you are considering purchasing a property with multiple units, check for the chance to go a little larger than you would first think. This lets you take advantage of economies of scale.Only invest in one type of property at a time. Regardless of whether your real estate investment is a office, apartment complex, or undeveloped commercial land, it is important to concentrate your efforts on only one investment. Each kind of investment will requires a full time commitment. Becoming a guru in one investment category is preferable to minimal success spread across multiple investments.
TIP! Double-check that you are seeking a realistic amount of money for your property. There are a lot of factors that determine the value of the lot.
If you are trying to choose between two good commercial properties, think big. If you will be financing the purchase, you should take into account that doing so will require just as much time and effort for a small lot as it will for a larger lot. Think of it like purchasing in bulk; as you buy more, each individual unit costs less.
Search Engine
TIP! Commercial property dealings are exponentially more complicated and time intensive than buying a residential home is. You need to understand, you have to be diligent in order to get a profit.
Get yourself set up online before you buy any property. Make a LinkedIn profile or personal website. Strive to improve the search engine rank of your website through search engine optimization. The idea is for people to learn about you by just entering your name into a search field.
TIP! Before you can start using the property you?ve purchased, you might need to make some improvements. This might include superficial improvements such as repainting a wall or arranging the furniture more efficiently.
While searching through different properties, make a checklist of each tour you went on. Make sure to advise the property owners when you want to take the next step past the first proposal responses. Do not fear letting the owners know that you are interested in other properties. It may help get you a better deal.
TIP! Aim to avoid default before you sign a real estate lease. This will decrease the probability of the tenant defaulting on the lease.
Occupation is the key when you purchase commercial properties for rent. If you have an unoccupied property, you will be the person paying for the maintenance and upkeep. Figure out why you have spaces that are consistently open. In some cases, you might need to do some problem-solving so that tenants will want to rent these spaces.
TIP! Prior to making any purchase, be certain that you?re dealing with a corporation or firm that truly takes care of their clients. If you don?t, you could pay more for some mistake that you could?ve avoided to begin with.
If you have found the right commercial property for your needs, read the lease in its entirety prior to signing it. Sometimes, a long lease contains not only standard lease clauses, but extra agreements that the real estate company sneaked into the lease without discussing with you. By reading the lease in full, you will be protecting your organization from potential problems in the future.
TIP! Think about any environmental concerns that the property poses. For example, the previous property owners might not have disposed of hazardous waste appropriately.
You should have a necessary-to-know list, and emergency maintenance must always have a place on that list. Inquire with your landlord about who handles the emergency repairs in the space you rent. Keep a list of phone numbers close to you, and make sure you select companies that answer quickly. Use any advice you can gather from a landlord to protect your customers with properly configured emergency plans.
TIP! Your investment might prove to be time-consuming in the beginning. First, you will need to search for a golden opportunity.
Examine socioeconomic conditions in the neighborhood you?re thinking of purchasing commercial real estate in. Pay special attention to the unemployment rate, and the average income level in your property?s neighborhood. If the building is near certain specific buildings, including hospitals, universities, or large companies, you might be able to sell it faster and for more money.
TIP! Look around at the general environment around the building. Since the responsibility lies at your feet, if there is any environmental waste that needs to be cleaned up, you will be the one who has to do it.
Advertise commercial property both to local and distant buyers. A lot of sellers fall into the misconception that only the local buyers are interested parties in potential purchase. Many private investors are interested in cheap or affordable properties in other areas of the country or world.
TIP! More is better when it comes to buying a property with multiple units. It will be easier to maximize your profit if you have more than one unit to rent.
Have an understanding on what exactly it is you are looking for when it comes to commercial real estate. List the qualities that concern you most in a property (e.g. restroom facilities, conference facilities, number of units available, square footage, etc.)
TIP! If you are thinking about commercial real estate investing, consider the many tax breaks you will receive. For example, commercial real estate investments garner you deductions for interest on top of your benefits for depreciation.
Take some digital photos of your property. Your pictures should portray any damage or defect in the property. Common things you should look for include any cracks or holes in walls, and damages to the carpeting.
TIP! In order to make sure that you are in prime position to grab that perfect location, gather multiple business partners who are capable of contributing. Find an agreement in advance: you could give the lender a percentage of what you make or repay lenders with fixed interest rates.
Remember that your relationship to the investors or lenders plays an important role. Some properties are sold from one person to the other without being listed. Having a good network is the best way to find the best deals.
Real Estate Broker
TIP! Pest control is something you should look into when renting or leasing a property. Getting pest control covered is especially important if you are renting in a building or area that has had previous pest issues.
One question you must ask potential real estate broker is that person?s definition of failure and success. Ask about their methods for gathering and interpreting results. Keep asking questions until the broker?s strategies are clear to you. You need to understand what these strategies are so that you can evaluate if you are comfortable with them. You need to share the same strategies and beliefs as your real estate broker in order to work successfully with them.
TIP! Don?t choose a real estate broker until you learn about his or her preferred negotiation techniques. Inquire about their background, such as how much experience they have and what type of training.
Commercial real estate agents come in different types. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords. It might be more beneficial to hire a broker who works only with tenants, as he has more experience working with those searching for a property.
TIP! When you write your letters of intent, start off by dealing with the larger issues, then move on to the smaller ones later. You can make all your negotiations less tense, so you can agree on any of the smaller issues first.
As previously mentioned, you may want to invest in the commercial real estate market for a variety of reasons. However, no matter what your reason may be, you need to be knowledgeable about the subject. By implementing some of the tips discussed in the article, you?ll have an edge on improving the profits you make in commercial real estate ventures.
Did you know that today you?d learn quite a bit about the stock market is up for the day? With your newly acquired information in hand, it is time to get to using it. If you use the info you have gotten here you will be winning. With luck, the results will be enough to convince you to continue learning.

Freelancers cobble together part-time jobs to make 'portfolio careers'
By Alyssa Goldman, LearnVest
Russ Juskalian, 30, is a journalist based in Munich who has reported from Southeast Asia, above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland and from the Himalayan foothills in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
As you?d expect, he writes articles related to his travels. But, unlike most journalists, he also sells his photos, giving him a second career as a photographer.
If that weren?t enough, in his spare time, he teaches classes in science writing, international freelancing and travel writing through an online program offered by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
?My schedule varies dramatically from week to week, month to month,? he says. ?Because I have so many competing things going on ? writing, editing images, pitching, preparing for upcoming classes, grading student work ? I tend to compartmentalize my time, so that I have a series of tasks that I must get done before moving on to the next ones.?
So-called ?slashers,? like reporter/photographer/teacher?Juskalian, are part of an emerging trend known as the ?portfolio career.? And if you?re the right personality type, it can be an incredibly rewarding ? and profitable ? career move.
How portfolio careers became so big
Marci Alboher, author of ?One Person/Multiple Careers,? defines ?slashers? as individuals who?ve created a ?portfolio career? involving multiple identities. Their income comes from part-time employment, temporary work, freelance assignments or a personal business ? or they work a full-time job, while pursuing other lucrative interests.
Barrie Hopson, co-author of ?10 Steps to Creating a Portfolio Career,? says that this ?type of career offers a much more fulfilling work-life blend, not to mention a safety net of several jobs?so if you lose one or choose to quit a job, you?ll still have other sources of income.
During the heart of the recession, people took on portfolio careers out of necessity. So now that the job market is improving,?why is the slasher lifestyle becoming even more common.
?Increasingly, people are finding that they don?t want to do the same thing day in and day out,? Hopson says. ?The traditional, single-track career pattern of the last century (think ladder) is now more difficult to find, and if you do pursue that, you?ll almost certainly have to move between companies.?
That said, portfolio careers aren?t for everyone.
To determine if a portfolio career is right for you, consult your high school extracurricular schedule, suggests?Erin Albert, author of ?Plan C: The Full-Time Employee and Part-Time Entrepreneur.? Did you dabble in one or more activities, such as theater, music, art or sports? ??If you craved variety, then you?ll most likely crave variety now,? Albert says.
Another question to consider: If you won the lottery tomorrow, and money was no object, what would you do with your life? ?If your brain excitedly goes in 50 different directions in answer to that question, chances are that you have portfolio career potential,? Albert says.
If you think that you might be made of the right stuff, consider these questions before jumping into a portfolio career:
* Do you multitask and manage your time well?
* Do you crave flexibility and creativity?
* Are you organized?
* Are you open to new opportunities?
If you answered yes to most of these questions, this path could be the one for you.
Only one of the 46 portfolio careerists that Hopson studied have returned to a single-track career in the past two years. According to Hopson, all of the participants claimed that they were happier as slashers, which is no wonder, since most of them earned more within two years of their portfolio career than they ever did as a full-time employee.
What to do before launching a portfolio career?
Foresee and handle any conflicts of interest.?This applies to conflicts both with a specific day job and at the career level. For instance, if you stay at your full-time job, but you need more time to dedicate to other interests, have an honest conversation with your employer to come up with the best solution. Additionally, make sure that your other pursuits won?t negatively impact that?career overall.
Only one of the 46 portfolio careerists that Hopson studied have returned to a single-track.
?The good and bad news here is that you have the power to create whatever custom-designed career you want,? Albert says. ?But it does take work and an honest appraisal of what you really want.??
Have at least one consistent line of work.?Alboher notes that it?s always smart to have one or two steady jobs, so that you have a base level of income. Alboher adds that many portfolio careerists take the anchor-orbiter approach, meaning one job requires a physical presence at a certain location during a certain time (i.e. office job), while the other jobs (i.e. freelance work) ?orbit? around it.
Start a rainy day fund.?Put six months to two years of savings in your bank account to support your cost of living ? just in case.?For full-time freelancers, the recommendation is at least a year?s worth of savings. (Read more on the?seven reasons why you need an emergency fund.)?If you?d like to create your own business, Albert suggests launching it while still working your day job. Whether you decide to quit or not, saving is an absolute must?especially if you have a family. Albert explains that a person with three kids, a mortgage and a lot of bills has different (and greater) risks to consider than a recent college graduate.
Portfolio careers also have many benefits
?Anyone who has ever been pink-slipped, fired or laid off understands the importance of moving multiple careers forward and not putting all career eggs in one basket (figuratively speaking),? Albert says. ?By juggling multiple careers, one can have flexibility and adaptability, which are two key skills every employee in this post-economic downturn needs to have to succeed in the future.?
Plus, if you do choose to return to a traditional work environment, your extensive repertoire and transferable skills from your portfolio career might give you a leg up against other applicants.
Juskalian definitely seconds the flexibility and adaptability comments, not only because his income is irregular, but because his work flow is, too. Depending on what?s going on in his personal life, his schedule can swing between periods centered around friends and family to periods of almost no personal time and all traveling, writing, editing and teaching.
?I find my lifestyle very fulfilling,? he says. ?But there?s no doubt that it takes a certain mentality ? and a lot of energy ? to juggle my career.?

Hundreds of teens mob pedestrians on Chicago's Magnificent Mile
By Alexandria Fisher, NBCChicago.com
Several teens were arrested after dozens of mob groups began attacking pedestrians on Chicago?s downtown Magnificent Mile area on Saturday night.
Police responded to reports of disturbances near Michigan and Chicago Avenues.
Police said 28 teens were arrested during the incident and no serious injuries were reported.
The teens charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and battery and later released, according to News Affairs Officer Perkus.
Eleven other teens were charged with the same misdemeanor charges after they attacked a group of women on the CTA Red Line, police said.
Read more stories at NBCChicago.com
?You have over three to four hundred teenagers with mob action, jumping on individuals that are downtown,? said community activist Andrew Holmes. ?Multiple people have been arrested and I caution those parents that get this call about your child being arrested -- maybe you need to check your child.?
Officers began breaking up the attacks by ushering teens to the Red Line. Chaos continued underground but many attackers reportedly left the area.
?I just saw a cluster run down to the Red Line,? said Red Line passenger Amanda Dobson. ?I didn't know what was going on. I just kind of stepped back and let the police do what they needed to do.?
Police continued to patrol the area on bikes, horses and on foot as smaller groups wandered around the Loop.
It is not clear if the attacks are related to a similar mobbing of Ford City Mall last month.
Residents were concerned that this could be the first in a long line of attacks after warm weather brought on a string of similar instances last year.
"It's been happening a lot around here," said Eric Baldinger, who works along the Magnificent Mile. "Just keep your wallet close and your purse closer."
Others said the attacks were disappointing and feared for the future of the city.
"I think it?s very childish," said resident Angelica Wilson. "That?s what wrong with the generation today because there?s always petty fights going on down here and everybody getting hurt. We don?t need more problems."
