Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Band, Choir, Orchestra? WHAT! Yes, orchestra is also an elective in high school although it is not as visible as the aforementioned subjects. Coronado orchestra does not play a concert weekly but they do have several performances every year. There are no T-Shirts, concessions, programs, or tickets to be sold, and there are no Pep Rallies before big performances. However the orchestra does have a lot to cheer about this year.

There is a new conductor at the helm of the Coronado Varsity Orchestra this year. Mrs. Laura Flanagan has been teaching for LubbockISD for a total of nine years, most recently at Irons Middle School. She was at Irons for six years and prior to that she taught at Atkins Middle School for three years. Flanagan is excited about bringing new ideas to performances this year.

Returning again this year to instruct for the J.V. orchestra is Mr. John Cain who has been conducting orchestra in LISD since 1997. Mr. Cain has been at Coronado for the past 6 years and prior to that he taught for Dunbar, Alderson, and Estacado. People might see Cain in performances throughout Lubbock playing in a Mariachi band called Amistad. This year there is a total of 60 orchestra students, 3 seniors, 8 juniors, 10 sophomores, and 39 freshman. Mr. Cain has said that ?it is nice to have so many talented young players to join the orchestra this year?. Currently the orchestra teachers are Flanagan and Cain, but previously the position was held by Mrs. Carathers for 3 years and Mr. Wyrick for an astounding 27 years at Coronado.

The instruments that make up the string orchestra are the Violins (the smallest played on the shoulder), the Viola (slightly larger than a violin and also played on the shoulder), the Cello which is placed on the floor and the cellist braces the instrument between the knees, and lastly the Bass which is the largest instrument and is played while standing. An orchestra does not only play classical music. In the past LISD orchestras have played songs such as ?Purple Haze? by Jimi Hendrix and ?Eleanor Rigby? by the Beatles. Some instruments of the Coronado band have teamed up with the orchestra in the past to play different genres of music. Strings and wind instruments together are referred to as a Full Orchestra.

The Coronado Orchestra in the past has had several concerts every year and they have been on trips for performances in areas such as South Padre Island and Austin for state competitions.? The Coronado Orchestra can proudly boast about an incredible 44 consecutive years in a row receiving sweepstakes at UIL competitions.?

Planned for the orchestra this year is a fall concert. Orchestra will also be working with the Coronado Choir and Theatre to perform a musical. There will be regional and state competitions once again and then later in the year, a String Fling performance is anticipated. Every spring, the LISD orchestras come together to perform a concert that is held at the Lubbock Civic Center and in the past the venue has been completely filled.

The Coronado Orchestra is an INSTRUMENTAL part of the Mustang Success.
