Union Settlement Gets $50K Grant for Fatherhood Program

Union Settlement Association has received a $50,000 grant from The Russell Grinnell Memorial Trust to support its fatherhood program. This grant will enable the program to provide fathers, ages 16-24, with services, tools and resources that they need to care for their children, and to ensure that their children benefit from a warm, supportive, developmentally-sensitive environment.

?We are grateful for this generous grant from the Grinnell Memorial Trust which will allow us to positively affect the lives the young fathers and their children,? said David Nocenti, Executive Director of Union Settlement Association, the oldest and largest social services organization in East Harlem. ?We are excited for this opportunity to build upon our already successful youth fathers program.?

Union Settlement?s Youth Services has offered the ?Young Men on the Rise? Fatherhood program since 2007, primarily through funding from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development. This program provides noncustodial fathers ages 16 to 24 with individual and family counseling, parent skills workshops, job readiness training and placement, visitation assistance/court advocacy, mentoring, conflict resolution training and life skills workshops.

The program helps low income minority young men to become engaged and supportive fathers with promising futures.? Through a series of workshops, counseling and activities, the young men in this program become better fathers, better providers, and better citizens. Last year?s program participants have greatly progressed; many are now providing financial support for their children, others have entered into voluntary agreements with their co-parents, and others are continuing their education by attending pre-GED programs, GED programs or high schools while others have entered the workforce.

This new grant from the Russell Grinnell Memorial Trust will expand services to involve the participants? children. Union Settlement will now offer an interconnected set of parent/child activities and services within its existing fatherhood program. These additional offerings include Interactive Developmental Workshops, age-appropriate trips for fathers and children, a ?Fathers? Pantry,? children?s books, educational toys and games for use on site and at home, participation incentives, and an End-of-Program Retreat, as well as a Closing Ceremony.
